How To Choose The Right Treatment For Your Injury

Most people have been injured or have some chronic pain at some time in their life. If you have been one of these people, you will know that it can be frustrating to find the cause of the pain, and the solution to the pain.

Here is where finding a professional can help you.

The problem is, who, and where, and how do you know this treatment, which will take you time and money, is going to make things better for you!

Here are some guidelines that I have come up with from seeing thousands of clients each year, assessing them, and watching them move, and exercise.

1. Stay away from “big packages”

A good therapist requires relatively few treatments to give you a benefit. In fact, for most injuries one or two treatments should give you significant improvement.

Unless you injury is chronic, AND you are unhealthy (lots of tenderness all over your body, no exercise, bad diet etc) treatments done right should have a big benefit.

So, if a place asks you to buy a “package of 30 treatments” then run away quickly. They usually are in it for the money, and not to help you.

2. Ask for testimonials

All the best therapists I know from around the world have testimonials from satisfied clients who got great results. You need to ask for testimonials from people who have a similar condition to yours.

3. Make sure they prepare you for treatment

Some therapists do a great job of preparing your body for treatment. They do one or more of the following so that your nervous system, and soft tissues are ready to be treated.

  • Accupuncture
  • Frequency Specific Micro current
  • Massage
  • Infra Red Lamp
  • Some kind of gentle stretching

These are the guys who care. Those who want as many patients as possible and don’t care as much about results, ask you to lie down, crack your bones left and right, and say “thank you, see you next week.”

4. Use the right method for your problem.

Injury treatment is a little like martial arts. Some times it is best to use punches, sometimes elbows, sometimes kicks, and sometimes wrestling!

Similarly, your problem needs the right solution for it to be fixed permanently.

For example, if you tear a ACL knee ligament, you need an orthopedic surgeon. Nothing else is going to help much. The two injuries which almost always need surgery are ACL tears, and SLAP tears.

Accupuncture can be used for multiple purposes

If you have other kinds of pain, the causes are usually from your soft tissues like fascia, muscles and tendons. There are multiple different treatments that can help with this. Their effectiveness depends on how good the therapist is, and if the specific method is helping the root cause of your problem.

Fascia and scar tissue - You feel like your muscles are “hard” even when not contracted, or you have areas that feel “stuck” when you move. The best methods for this are Active Release, acupuncture and Fascial Abrasion Tool.

Muscles not functioning well - you feel weak in certain muscles for no particular reason, or your movements are not normal because of muscle dysfunction. Or you feel pain when performing certain movements. Acupuncture and Trigenics are good for this problem

Trigger points and referred pain - tender spots in your body that cause pain in that area and perhaps in other areas (referred pain). I have found that accupuncture is excellent for this. Self massage or Self myofascial release works well too.

Inflexibility - All the above causes can lead to a loss in flexibility. This is especially noticeable when one side of your body moves better than another. Once the root problem is addressed as above, the best way to maintain flexibility is old fashioned – stretching!The best stretching method and one that is commonly used at my Singapore gym is called Fascial Stretching. This is designed by Ann and Chris Fredericks whom Olympic athletes trust with their bodies.

So, there we have it, if you have a problem get the right solution from the right therapist, and the right time.
